Meghan Markle Wore Jeans to Wimbledon and It Apparently Sparked Controversy

Culture

Unfortunately and perhaps unsurprisingly, the British press has had pitchforks out for Meghan Markle after her surprise appearance at Wimbledon last Thursday to watch her friend Serena Williams play a match. Some outlets tried to make a scandal out of her security team asking people not take photographs of her. Now, The Times has a feature where it reports that some All England Club members were very, very upset that the Duchess of Sussex wore denim to the event because apparently that’s too casual for them.

An All England Club source told the outlet that Meghan had “wanted to come incognito but there were problems. They couldn’t invite her into the royal box because she was wearing jeans, but that didn’t really matter because all she wanted to do was come and watch Serena. Andy Murray was on Court 1 afterwards, and it was a massive faux pas not to watch a Brit when she is signed up to the royal family.”

One particularly salty official who organized the event said that “it was a nightmare, she was a nightmare.”

But the All England Club, of which Meghan’s sister-in-law Kate Middleton is patron, insisted that all that snotty talk does not represent their point of view. “Any suggestion that the duchess’s visit was anything other than a privilege for the club is categorically not the view of the club, and she is always welcome to attend the championships,” the Club said.

A palace source additionally told the Telegraph that Meghan really had only come to Wimbledon to watch Williams. She had no intention of going to the royal box.

Another palace source debunked the photo drama to the Times too: “It is not unusual for people accompanying members of the royal family at private, or public, engagements to ask members of the public not to take photographs,” the source explained. “This is to enable members of the royal family to properly engage with people and events.”
