Warning: Spoilers ahead for Big Little Lies season.
Last year, HBO’s Big Little Lies reeled us in with its dramatic, nuanced depiction of motherhood, friendship, and marriage.
After the climactic finale we waited patiently to hear if the all-star hit would return for a second season, since the novel the show is based on ends where season one left off. We learned in December that the show will indeed return, and filming has now started. This time the show is coming back with new characters, a new director, and one very big star.
Below, everything we know about season two.
The show is coming back this summer.
After months of speculation, HBO finally revealed that season two of the show is slated to return in June 2019. More details on the show’s return will be revealed fairly soon, according to People.
There are some brand new photos.
In February, HBO released four advance images. They feature the five core characters of the show: Reese Witherspoon (Madeline), Nicole Kidman (Celeste), Laura Dern (Renata), Shailene Woodley (Jane), and Zoë Kravitz (Bonnie). And in one of them, Meryl Streep appears; she is playing Mary Louise Wright, the mother of the late Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgard).
There is a new director.
Along with the season two confirmation came reports of a new director, this time a woman. Andrea Arnold will direct season two, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She is replacing Jean-Marc Vallée, who won an Emmy for the show.
Meryl is coming.
It was announced in January that none other than Meryl Streep is joining the cast. As mentioned above, the three-time Oscar winning actress will play Mary Louise Wright, the mother of the late Perry Wright. Kidman gave us our first look at Meryl’s character in an Instagram post.
During the 2019 Golden Globes, HBO released a short clip from season 2 in a montage of the year’s forthcoming highlights. In a voiceover, Streep’s character says, “I want to know what happened that night,” as the camera shows the five main characters in a police line-up after the fateful costume party that concluded season one.
The main actresses are all excited to be back.
All of our favorite Monterey moms are coming back for season two. Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, and Zoë Kravitz all posted photos from set when production started in March. “Watch out Monterey, here we come!” Witherspoon captioned her photo with Dern.
What other new characters can we expect?
Per Deadline, Monterey will welcome Corey Brockfield (played by Douglas Smith), a surfer and colleague of Jane’s. The kids will have a new teacher called Michael Perkins (Mo McRae), and Denis O’Hare will portray a character called Ira Farber. But the most significant additions will be Martin Donovan and Crystal Fox, who will play Bonnie’s parents, Martin and Elizabeth.
What’s going to happen?
HBO has given us some idea of what to expect next season. The show will “explore the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode…the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom,” E! News reports.
We’ll definitely see more protective parenting from the moms, especially Renata (Dern) who will reportedly have it out with a new school teacher, played by Mo McRae, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This season will also explore more of Bonnie’s (Kravitz) background, including the introduction of her abusive mother, played by Crystal Fox.
Perry is really dead, right?
Unclear (but probably). Season one came to a dramatic end after Perry seemingly met his death. But the actor who plays him, Alexander Skarsgård, has been extremely cryptic about what may or may not have happened to him. “I don’t even know if I’m really dead or not. I feel okay right now but we’ll see,” he told People on the red carpet at the 2018 Golden Globes. As The Hollywood Reporter confirms, Skarsgård is set to reappear in season two.
But the cast have finished shooting.
Reese Witherspoon recently stopped by The Tonight Show to discuss her new book Whiskey in a Teacup, and revealed that the cast and crew have already wrapped up production for the second season of Big Little Lies. According to her Instagram, the cast finished shooting the new season back in August.
Reese Witherspoon and Meryl Streep’s characters have quite the relationship.
Earlier in August, a photo surfaced of a miffed Reese Witherspoon hurling an ice cream cone at Meryl Streep on the street. Of course, this was a teaser from the upcoming season. And if you had any doubts about Witherspoon’s aim, the new season will be a real treat. “Yes, it is true. I threw an ice cream cone at Meryl Streep. This might inform you on our relationship on the show,” she told Fallon.
“Oh, but I really hucked it at her, y’all,” she bragged. “And I nailed it!”
Meryl Streep vs Reese Witherspoon? It’s the feud I never knew I wanted.
